“We want to start a movement to make the paper industry greener than green.”

QUESTIONS ABOUT

The Product

Two women working with paper in water

  • In 2001, Vijendra, our founder, was out walking early one morning at Amer Fort when he saw some elephants for the first time ever. Despite spending his whole life in India, he’d never seen elephants in real life before. He was totally gripped by them and wanted to get a closer look. So, he and his friend joined the procession of elephants and tourists walking up to the temple. They didn’t realize they’d got a bit too up close and personal until a huge pile of dung fell, just missing Vijendra’s ear. His first thought was, ‘Oh my God, that’s huge!’ As the poo hit the ground and fell apart, his second thought was, ‘Oh my God, that’s really fibrous.’ At that precise moment, his crazy idea for making paper from elephant poo was born.

  • We begin by collecting poo from the elephant's living areas or from the streets where the elephants are passing through. Then it goes through a lengthy process, including washing and grinding, before adding cotton waste – which makes the paper stronger – before we can turn it into different products. View the whole process here.

  • Of course not! The initial fibers go through a thorough washing and sanitation process before the paper making process begins.

  • Yes! We offer the ability to add your logo to any of our products or upload a custom design.

  • Most of the currently available paper products are made out of wood and utilize harmful chemicals. Our products are compostable, made from recycled materials, and 100% chemical-free…leaving only a positive impact on our environment.

  • All of our products are made from recycled materials (elephant poo!). After use, they can be recycled or composted to feed your garden and nourish your soil.

  • We use recycled and recyclable packaging. And we’re working toward making recycled plastic boxes which could be easily reused.

  • Yes! Clients pay the shipping cost, and VOILA! Samples will arrive at your doorstep. Contact us for your sample.

  • Shipping our products overseas is still much better for the environment than buying standard paper.

If you like numbers… sending 100 kg of paper from Delhi to London creates about 900 grams of carbon – but it has already prevented 2.4 mature trees from being cut down. And those trees absorb 52 kg of carbon and generate 283 kg of oxygen every year.

  • Nothing. Nada. All of our prices include shipping (domestic or international) so the price you see is the price you pay, there are no nasty surprises at checkout.

  • After we finalize the design, your order will be on your doorstep within 28 days to account for manufacturing and shipping time. If it hasn’t arrived after 28 days, please contact us and we’ll look into it for you.

  • All of our products are made by hand and most of them are personalized so, unfortunately, we aren’t able to offer returns.

QUESTIONS ABOUT

Our Impact

Women with headscarf looking through paper

  • This small business is providing safe work opportunities for underprivileged women to earn the money to support their families and children.

  • Situations are evolving for women in Rajasthan, but unfortunately, they are still very difficult. Girls are getting married before completing their education. Because they are not allowed to pursue education and jobs, their primary focus is on household tasks for their families. We are trying to change this by providing work that women can do on their own doorsteps.

  • Before Covid-19, we directly employed seven women in our small unit. In addition, 18 women worked for us from their own homes.

  • When Rajasthan was divided into small and large states centuries ago, they were ruled by Raja-Maharaja (kings). These kings had their own army, and the elephants were an important part of their army because of their ability to break the doors of large forts and castles. Jaipur Maharaja also had a strong army and many elephants were included.

In 1947, India became a republican country and all different states merged into one nation. This caused most of the soldiers to become part of Indian national security forces. The elephants were not adopted.

At the same time, Mahaots (elephant caretakers) also lost their jobs. Jaipur Maharaja quickly gave the responsibility to feed elephants to the Mahaots. Mahaots were roaming in villages with elephants, begging for food for both their elephants and their families. Unfortunately, this was not enough. Later, the government allowed elephant rides at Amber Fort (a world-famous tourist attraction).

Fast forward to the present day… we love our gentle giants! We keep their living areas clean by removing their poo while also using a portion of our funds to give them a proper diet.

  • We are living at a world-famous tourist destination, so you can see us in action any time. You can make your own paper if you are crazy enough to put your hands in the poo like us!

  • Yes! You can stay with local families and help us to teach language skills and new trends in design to women in nearby villages. Get in touch with us if you’d like to visit.
